NYS Nutrition Improvement Project

The NYS Nutrition Improvement Project (NYSNIP) helps people who live alone and receive SSI by automatically giving them a minimum monthly food stamp benefit allotment on the same plastic benefit card they use for Medicaid. Benefit amounts are standardized, and participants can receive food stamps through NYSNIP up to 48 months. Depending on a participant’s circumstances, they may be eligible for much more food stamp benefits than they are receiving. NYSNIP will not change a person’s monthly SSI benefit check. No separate food stamp application, no interview and no separate verification is needed; the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) relies on information provided by the Social Security Administration (SSA) through the State Data Exchange in order to generate a food stamp case.

Read more about NYSNIP or local projects throughout New York State that can further explain NYSNIP (upstate and New York City).
